Believe it or not...it wasn't that long ago that you were a wee child in elementary school. Remember how grand life was? How is elementary different than junior high? What do you miss?
Your project this week is epic. You and a partner will be assigned an elementary class and classroom. You are going to capture AT LEAST 50 images of the life in that room.
The classroom is impacted by many factors - the space itself, the lighting, the desks and equipment, the teacher, and the students. Each one is unique and distinctive.
On Tuesday you will spend some time "getting to know the room". Pay attention to the details - how it is organized, the "stuff" that we don't see in our classrooms anymore, and how it FEELS to be there. Pay attention to the energy of the room. Is it lively and fun? Calm and relaxed?
Capture images that show this feeling and these details.
On Thursday you will visit again. Pay attention to the people in the room. Strive to capture the personality of each person in the room. Try to use your ninja skills to snap shots while they aren't paying attention. Sit somewhere and relax, let them forget you are there, then start snapping. Move very little around the room. If students are distracted by you, take a break. Enjoy what they are doing...offer to help out. Then, snap shots again. Try to capture the unique qualities of each person - including teachers and staff members.
Friday is a combo day. Use this to visit again, filling any holes you need in your images. You should have more than 50 shots of the people, the classroom, the equipment, the personality of that classroom. More can be better. Play around with your camera settings, take advantage of the different mood of today. Have fun.
